Tips

Worth doing before you hang it

Pick one treatment and hold it. Black and white photos in matching frames read as a set even when the pictures span decades.

  • All black and white, or all colour. A mix of the two reads as unfinished.
  • One frame finish throughout. Let the photographs carry the variety, not the frames.
  • Mix close-ups with wider shots. The eye needs somewhere to rest between faces.
  • Print a size up. A photo that looks generous on screen shrinks on a wall.
  • Even gaps, around 5cm. Photos taken decades apart then read as one set.

How do I stop a family photo wall looking cluttered?

Hold one thing constant. One frame finish, one colour treatment, even gaps. When those match, the eye reads the wall as a single object and the photographs themselves can be as varied as you like.

Should family photos be black and white or colour?

Either works, but not both on one wall. Black and white hides the fact that photos were taken decades apart on different cameras. Colour keeps the warmth, but the tones need to sit reasonably close, so it suits photos from a similar period.

What size should I print family photos for a wall?

Bigger than feels right on screen. A 15 by 10cm print that looks fine in your hand disappears on a wall. For a cluster, mix A4 and A3 with one larger anchor photo, and see them on a photo of the wall before you order.

How many photos should a family gallery wall have?

Start with five to seven and leave room to add. A wall that is full on day one has nowhere to grow, and family walls usually gain pictures over the years.
